Facebook stock briefly passes IPO price

Shares of Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) rose above the company's $38 initial offering price Wednesday for the first time since the day of its public launch, but it dipped slightly below that watermark level in early trading.

Wall Street snapped up Facebook shares following a recent earnings report that showed the social network had dramatically improved its ability to make money off traffic from mobile device users.

Out-of-control oil leaks at Canadian tar sands site

Ah, the beautiful wilds of western Canada. Rivers, mountains, forests? and out-of-control oil leaks that have already spurted thousands of barrels of toxic bitumen into the environment.

The leaks were caused by an underground blowout at a tar sand project in north-east Alberta run by Canadian Natural Resources that had been certified safe by government regulators. One of the firm's scientists has been reported saying that they are mystified as to what went wrong or how to stop the leak. The company hasn't disclosed how fast the leaks are progressing.

Since May, there have been leaks through surface fissures at four of the firm's sites in the area, killing wildlife and raising questions about how well the safety of tar sands operations can be assessed. The company extracts bitumen by injecting steam into the tar sands at high pressure to melt the bitumen and push it to the surface.

Chris Severson-Baker of the Pembina Institute in Edmonton, Alberta, estimates that the method, known as cyclic steam stimulation, accounts for about 30 per cent of tar sands extraction. There's nothing inherently risky about cyclic steam stimulation, he says, making these leaks all the more worrisome. "If there are cases like this, it shows things are not as predictable as we might like," says Severson-Baker.

In January, Canada's Energy Resources Conservation Board revealed that some 5700 barrels of bitumen had leaked from well sites run by Canadian Natural Resources four years ago. But investigations by the company and regulator couldn't determine what had gone wrong. They suggested that the geology of the area was weaker than they had thought and couldn't contain the pressure from the steam.

The spill could fuel opposition to the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry oil from this and similar sites. Opponents worry that the pipeline itself has a high risk of leaking, and that increased extraction will exacerbate carbon emissions. US president Barack Obama has said that he will only give the project the green light if it doesn't add to carbon emissions, and on Saturday he questioned the economic benefits of the pipeline.

China factory sector perks up, elsewhere gloomy

BEIJING: China offered a rare bright spot in an otherwise sluggish Asian manufacturing sector in July with a stronger than expected government purchasing managers index that eased some concerns over the health of the world's second-biggest economy.

Although the China PMI surprised and gave a boost to regional share prices and commodities, it also signalled only a modest pace of growth. A rival report from HSBC was much more gloomy, showing factory activity fell to its lowest in nearly a year.

"I think the official report does offer a slim hope that the economy is stabilising at least, but it is still a bit early to conclude that things have turned around decisively," Wei Yao, China economist at Societe Generale in Hong Kong.

Elsewhere in Asia, other PMI reports suggested factory output and new orders falling in July in India, South Korea and Taiwan. In Indonesia, a PMI report signalled that output and new orders were holding at similar levels to June.

New export orders also fell broadly in Asia. However, overseas demand was still growing in India, although at a weaker pace than in June.

The Asian PMIs, which seek to measure a range of conditions in manufacturing including employment, stock levels and backlogs of work, were released ahead of similar reports on the euro zone and the United States, which are expected to show factory activity picking up at a more robust pace than in Asia.

The euro zone's PMI is expected to show the manufacturing sector grew for the first time in well over a year with the index rising to 50.1 from 48.8 in June. The data is due at 0758 GMT.

A PMI reading above 50 points to expansion from the month before, while a reading below suggests contraction in activity.

In the United States, the Institute for Supply Management is expected to report that its PMI rose to 52.0 in July from 50.9 in June, extending a rebound from a contraction in factory activity in May. The figures are due to be released at 1400 GMT.

Japan Finance Minister under fire for comment referring to Nazis and constitutional reform

TOKYO ? ?Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso has retracted a comment he made this week suggesting Japan should follow the Nazi example of how to change the country's constitution.

Aso has drawn outrage for the remark that Japan should study how the Nazi party stealthily changed Germany's constitution before World War II before anyone realized it.

Speaking to reporters, Aso said Thursday that he was misunderstood and only meant to say that loud debate over whether Japan should change its postwar constitution to allow a higher profile for the military was not helpful.

He made the remark during a Tokyo speech Monday to an ultra-conservative group

The comments have drawn complaints from Jewish groups and neighboring South Korea as an example that Japan has not learned from its militaristic past.

Tony Stewart Flips Five Times In Canada Sprint Car Accident

Tony Stewart flipped five times during a scary sprint car wreck on a dirt track race in Canada. Thankfully, the NASCAR driver made it out of the wreck no worse for wear.

The wreck happened on Monday night as Stewart battled for the lead. It came just 24 hours after the driver finished fourth in the Sprint Cup Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis.

USA Today reports that Stewart-Haas Racing spokesman Mike Arming stated of the accident, ?Tony Stewart is fine. He walked away from last night?s incident unhurt and will race tonight in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series feature.?

Tuesday night?s race is one that Stewart has previously won. Despite the lack of injuries, Stewart?s scary crash on Monday night likely reminded him and his fans of fellow driver Jason Leffler?s fatal crash in the same type of car last month.

Leffler?s crash happened in New Jersey when his car drove into an outside barrier. Another sprint car driver, Joshua Burton, was killed in May at Bloomington Speedway in Indiana, notes ESPN.

But Tony Stewart understands the dangers of racing, and isn?t about to quit his dream job. He stated the weekend after Leffler?s tragic death:

?I am as careful as I am when I get in a car on a city street. There will be more people that die in car crashes today than die in race cars. It?s just part of it, and I am one of those that believe when it?s your time, it?s your time.?

Thankfully for Tony, Monday night?s scary crash wasn?t his time to go. This has been a busy week for the NASCAR driver, who will climb behind the wheel of a race car every day this week. While Wednesday won?t be a race, Stewart is expected to test a Sprint car.

But Stewart couldn?t ?think of a better week to celebrate,? as it included the first NASCAR race at Eldora Speedway in 43 years and a win for Stewart-Haas Racing at the Brickyard on Sunday.
