Police investigate gang graffiti on church

Central District gang graffiti

A Seattle church, business and private residence were damaged by gang-related taggers late Saturday or early Sunday, and police are searching for suspects.

The graffiti was discovered about 7:30 a.m. Sunday on Mt. Cavalry Church at 1412 23rd Ave.

During the investigation, officers also discovered the neighboring Med Mex restaurant and a private residence also had what police believe was gang graffiti.

Detective Renee Witt asked that anyone with information about the suspected taggers call 911.

The Med Mix, at the intersection of 23rd Avenue and East Union Street, was formerly Philadelphia Cheese Steak where owner Degene Barecha was shot to death and a customer was wounded on Jan. 30, 2008. His killer, Rey Alberto Davis-Bell, was convicted two years later and is now in prison. Read more about Barecha?s case here. Barecha came into possession of the restaurant after former owner Troy Hackett was found slain nearby in 2003. That killing remains unsolved.
