Advance will help astrophysicists explore where stars are born

A University of Delaware-led research team reports an advance in the June 1 issue of Science that may help astrophysicists more accurately analyze the vast molecular clouds of gas and dust where stars are born.

Krzysztof Szalewicz, professor of physics and astronomy at UD, was the principal investigator on the National Science Foundation funded research project, which solved equations of quantum mechanics to more precisely describe the interactions between molecules of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, the two most abundant gases in space.

Such calculations are important to spectroscopy, the science that identifies atoms or molecules by the color of light they absorb or emit. Sir Isaac Newton discovered that sunlight shining through a prism would separate into a rainbow of colors. Today, spectroscopy is essential to fields ranging from medical diagnostics to airport security.

In astrophysics, spectrometers attached to telescopes orbiting in space measure light across the visible, infrared, and microwave spectrum to detect and quantify the abundance of chemical elements and molecules, as well as their temperatures and densities, in places such as the vast Orion Nebula, a celestial maternity ward crowded with newborn stars, some 1,500 light years away.

Whereas carbon monoxide the second-most abundant molecule in space is easily detected by spectrometers, such is not the case for hydrogen. Despite ranking as the most abundant molecule in space, hydrogen emits and absorbs very little light in the spectral ranges that can be observed. Thus, researchers must deduce information about molecular hydrogen from its weak interactions with carbon monoxide in the interstellar medium (the stuff between the stars).

"The hydrogen spectra get lost on the way, but carbon monoxide is like a lighthouse its spectra are observed more often than those of any other molecule," Szalewicz says. "You can indirectly tell what the density of hydrogen is from the carbon monoxide spectra."

Szalewicz and co-authors Piotr Jankowski, a former UD postdoctoral researcher who is now on the chemistry faculty at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland, and A. Robert W. McKellar, from the National Research Council in Ottawa, Canada, wanted to revisit the spectra of the hydrogen and carbon monoxide complex. The first time such a calculation was done was 14 years ago by Szalewicz and Jankowski, parallel to an accurate measurement by McKellar.

In their computational model, the scientists needed to determine first how electrons move around nuclei. To this end, they included simultaneous excitations of up to four electrons at a time. The energy levels produced by the rotations and vibrations of the nuclei then were computed and used to build a theoretical spectrum that could be compared with the measured one.

The team's calculations, accomplished with the high-powered kolos computing cluster at UD, have resulted in theoretical spectra 100 times more accurate than those published 14 years ago. The theoretical and experimental spectra are now in near-perfect agreement, which allowed the team to "assign" the spectrum, that is, to determine how each spectral feature is related to the underlying motion of the nuclei, Szalewicz says.

The combined theoretical and experimental knowledge about this molecular complex now can be used to analyze recent results from satellite observatories to search for its direct spectral signal. Even more importantly, this knowledge can be used to get better information about the hydrogen molecule in space from indirect observations, Szalewicz notes.

"Spectroscopy provides the most precise information about matter that is available," he says. "I am pleased that our computations have untangled such a complex problem."

Szalewicz's expertise is in numerically solving the equations for the motions of electrons resulting in molecules attracting or repelling each other and then using these interactions to look at different properties of clusters and condensed phases of matter.

His research has unveiled hidden properties of water and found a missing state in the beryllium dimer, both results previously reported in Science, and his findings about helium may lead to more accurate standards for measuring temperature and pressure.

Szalewicz was elected to the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science in 2010 and is a fellow of the American Physical Society.

5 Ways To Instantly Increase Your Credit Card Limit : Business and ...

High Credit Card LimitA lot of credit card holders aspire for a higher credit card limit.

But: credit card holders need to remember that to get a higher credit card limit, they must abide by the terms and conditions of the credit card company or their bank.

Here are 5 ways to get a higher credit card limit:

1. Prove your credit worthiness
The most important thing to do for getting a higher credit card limit is to prove your credit worthiness. This is the first thing that banks and companies look for when giving a higher credit limit.

2. Attract positive attention from the credit card company
At least: try to attract positive attention by paying finance charges once in a while. Obviously, this is not advisable on a repeating basis and should only be used as a last resort to increase your chances of getting a higher credit limit.

Proving to credit card companies and banks that you are good ?borrower? can be a convincing way to get a higher credit limit. But be careful because this strategy also means that you will be paying finance charges which can accumulate in a hurry.

3. Always spend within your credit card limit
Doing so means that you are capable of controlling your expenses.

4. Use your credit cards regularly
Don?t keep your cards for emergency use only. If you use your credit cards sparingly, banks and credit card companies will be unable to understand your spending and pay-back behavior. Under these circumstances, most banks and credit card companies will be reluctant to give you a higher credit card limit.

5. Avoid late payments as much as possible
This technique will not only increase your payment increase, but you may also have to pay an additional fine for not clearing bills on time. This will also dim your chances of getting a higher credit card limit.

The bottom line is that your performance in the records of banks and credit card companies will determine whether you?ll get a higher credit card limit or not.

Eastwood's daughter burns $100,000 handbag

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Birkin handbags can cost more than $100,000, but if you're director Clint Eastwood's teenage daughter, that's money to burn.

Francesca Eastwood, 19, star of the E! reality show "Mrs. Eastwood & Company" and her boyfriend, photographer Tyler Shields, posted photos to his website?of one of the pricey bags being bitten, sawed with a chainsaw, and set on fire.

"Destruction is a beautiful version of freedom," the copy on the page read. "Would you want this bag? Are you sad to see me destroy it?"

Many?who commented on Shields' site were less than impressed with the gesture.

Wrote one reader, "Destroy fakes and donate the ridiculous amount of money you would have spent to charity. That would have been 'a beautiful version of freedom...'"

Said another, "I had been a fan of your work for about five years, but, I vow to never give your photographs another glance now. This is incredibly insensitive to those in financial need, and, frankly, an embarrassment for the both of you. This is not artistry; it's a pathetic attempt at shock value."

Still others were more succinct about the action. Said one, "Go and work for a living and see if you burn a 100k bag. Hell you wouldnt even be burning a 50 dollar bag. That is NOT art losers."

But others defended Shields and Eastwood. Wrote one: "What the media fails to do is point out all the charities Tyler has donated to, along with all of the other amazing things he has done. ?It's a lot easier to HATE someone when you don't know anything about them."

An earlier post on Shields' website shows him destroying a pair of pricey Christian Louboutin high-heeled shoes. That post ends with the line, "Never let an object own you."

Shields and Eastwood are regulars on "Mrs. Eastwood & Company," which focuses on Dina Eastwood, wife of director Clint, as she manages a boy band, Overtone. Clint Eastwood has said he does not want to be a large part of the reality show.

What do you think of the destruction of the pricey bag? Is it art, or just a waste of money? Tell us on Facebook.

Bad Tech Etiquette To Avoid at Work - All VoIP News

Angie Reed is a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) expert and Switchvox UC Product Marketing Manager at Digium, the creator and sponsor of Asterisk, the world's most widely used open source communications software. Follow her @switchvox and read her blog.

Technology has simplified communications for most businesses, however the increased use of conference calls, video conferencing, and instant messaging has created a new list of off-putting behaviors that could land your business in an awkward situation.

2. Keep it short. IM works best for quick questions and updates. If the message is complicated, and takes more than a few sentences, pick up the phone or get out of your chair and walk down the hall to discuss.

1. Video conferencing is more widely used in recent years in an effort to save on travel costs. It's best to always assume the microphones and the cameras are on. That means don?t do or say anything you don?t want on camera.

2. Mute your phone if you dial in from a public area, or if you need to multi-task during on a call. There is nothing worse than feeling like the person on the other end of the line is not engaged.

3. Refrain from having side conversations during participating on calls. It makes it difficult for those on the call to understand the dialogue if there is more than one conversation taking place in the conference room.

4. Avoid loud snacks, smacking of gum, slamming of office drawers, crying babies, barking dogs or deep down any noise that will be magnified and hinder communication with other participants.

5. Don't shout into the speakerphone. Today's high-definition phones are particularly sensitive and you may come across louder than you intend. And, if you decide to move the phone around the room, keep in mind that the audience on the other side will hear it.

1. Don?t use your speakerphone. If you assumed that using the speakerphone on a cell phone was something that only happens on reality TV, think again. It seems to be a growing trend among many cell phone users ? and an annoyance for anyone standing close by. During it's fine that you can work from just about anywhere now, don't make everyone else part of your work day.

If you in effect use your speakerphone for cell phone calls at work and have that stuck-up attitude about it, I?d love to be your boss?

96% Moonrise Kingdom

All Critics (89) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (85) | Rotten (4) | DVD (1)

It makes you nostalgic for the pangs of young love.

What makes it an Anderson movie are the things he adds which mark all his films - the pop-cultural obsessions and excruciatingly detailed set decorations, overarching thematic concerns and little stylistic tics.

I liked this one because of its young performers, the evocative island setting (filmed in Rhode Island), Alexandre Desplat's lovely score and Robert Yeoman's slightly grainy cinematography.

The director's best film since 1998's Rushmore, it has none of the self-conscious smugness of The Life Aquatic or the empty eccentricity of The Royal Tenenbaums.

A gorgeously shot, ingeniously crafted, ?ber-Andersonian bonbon that, even in its most irritatingly whimsical moments, remains an effective deliverer of cinematic pleasure.

"Moonrise Kingdom" breezes along with a beautifully coordinated admixture of droll humor, deadpan and slapstick.

Wes Anderson's most sartorially significant film yet.

At once funny and melancholic, whimsical and poignantly true.

One is at times reminded of AE Housman.

Moonrise Kingdom is a delight... stuffed full of the quirky details and gags that are Anderson's trademarks, but it also possesses an emotional undertow that will tug at those viewers in tune with its singular sensibility.

Capturing our inner children

If the deadpan sensibility of the film ultimately leaves it feeling a tad lightweight, that isn't to say that Moonrise Kingdom isn't a funny, witty and well-crafted film.

Typically quirky Wes Anderson dramedy has lots of heart.

A bittersweet and evocative period piece that's both a visual and narrative delight.

No one has an eye or sensibility like Anderson's, but this is a chilly disappointment. The unaffecting kids are meant to be the emotional center, yet the adults steal the film.

I really wanted to like this film. I respect Wes Anderson and his distinctive voice as a writer-director ('Rushmore' is one of my favorite films of the 1990s), but this latest endeavor is so precious and self-aware that it nearly smothers itself.

Those who find the director's work flawed by preciousness, however, may grow impatient well before the movie reaches the 90-minute mark.

Anderson has imagined the '60s on the East Coast as if from an Eddie Bauer catalog and Boys' Life, with the sensibility of The New Yorker.

Like many holiday locations, you wouldn't want to live there, but a mini-break from the norm can be a real tonic.

A sweet, charming and altogether delightful bit of whimsy from writer/director Wes Anderson.

I normally end up liking Wes Anderson's films, but I love this one.

The delightful Moonrise Kingdom marks a career high for offbeat auteur Wes Anderson.

Moonrise Kingdom is bewitching.

Estate Planning ? Guidelines And Trustees

In case you are wisely trying to place some assets into a trust (inter vivos) in your lifetime, then you might have been being attentive to the vital differences between wills and trusts. A trust created during your life will be far safer with respect to its means to face up to challenges to how your assets are to be distributed during estate planning than a will. Making a belief is a brave factor to do, as a result of it telegraphs, to a certain extent, what you will do along with your property while you are nonetheless alive. This is what insulates it from assaults on your capability, as a result of it is unlikely, for example that, one in all your relations is going to say you are insane or feeble and unduly influenced by one other of your relations to your face and this makes the trust a far surer bet than a will, in some cases.

However, the belief additionally might engender onerous feels concerning the exclusion of a relative and those emotions will turn out to be identified to a person creating a trust while they?re still alive. This is the benefit of a will ? if individuals do not prefer it, you?ll by no means know. The will maker is long gone when people who do not like what they?ve carried out contest the need and people who do prefer it try to defend it. Although, it needs to be noted that intelligent drafting should be capable of alleviate the necessity of either a contest or a defense. That is why you need an intelligent estate planning legal professional to create your will quite than only a form. The attorney that creates your will often defends its contents, or in other words, their understanding of your wishes. The belief is a different story, as a result of your belief might be administered by someone (referred to as the trustee) for the purpose of those that the belief advantages (the beneficiaries).

One of the paramount problems of forming a trust is deciding what powers the trustee has and what powers they don?t have relative to the belongings you have got placed in trust. Keep in mind that a trustee is already assumed to have an obligation to benefit the trust and that many states have laws relating to what a trustee can and cannot do, if the settlor (the creator of the trust) does not specify otherwise. However, once more, you do not need to go away the monetary future of your trust up to the state any more than you need the state to resolve who gets your assets. Your wills and trusts attorney will be able to provide you with a list of the normal powers of a trustee in your state and let you know what they mean. Many of the powers concern what type of property the trustee can spend money on on behalf of the trust. For instance, the trustee is usually prohibited from shopping for basic securities for the trust because they are considered too risky. But, when you have chosen your trusted inventory dealer as your trustee and he or she has agreed, then this may be exactly the restriction you don?t want. Consult along with your lawyer concerning the form of trust you want to create and what the foundations are in your state. Remember, that these rules are there to cowl the bases in case you don?t make your own rules. Understanding the foundations that are there, and why, will give you a way of the kinds of guidelines that could be good and the ones that you?d slightly not have. As well as, it is possible for you to to present the trustee extra freedom than the state rules would enable, or less, depending on how conservatively you need your assets to be managed.

Be ready to have a candid dialog with your legal professional regarding what the principles are and what you want to see happen. It is good to remember that your property planning attorney has seen many trusts and understands how they work. Sometimes restrictions that seem good right now is perhaps the very restrictions that cripple your belief in a vastly completely different financial environment. In some cases, a trust might span a number of decades and the trustee might change together with the local weather the belief was created in. When radical financial adjustments have occurred, a trust with larger flexibility might be beneficial. So you?ve rather a lot to consider as you enter the exciting world of forming a trust. Do not let guidelines be off-putting, they are there as guides and once you understand them you?ll have a larger understanding of what you need. Ask your estate planner to give you information about the present rules and a few common recommendation about how to choose a trustee.

Stock Market Investing ? Where Do You Begin?

I?ve been on the investment recreation for some time now and I?ve reached the stage where I choose to invest in the stock market through individual stocks reasonably than collective investment autos like unit or funding trusts. The primary purpose for this is that I might prefer not to pay other individuals to do something that I do know I can do better myself.

Of course, it wasn?t at all times this way. It?s taken me a quarter of a century of expertise enjoying the markets to evolve my own worthwhile funding strategy. Once I first began out although, like most people, I did not have the arrogance to take my very own decisions. More important than that, I did not have a large lump sum to play with so as to diversify my holdings sufficiently and build in a measure of safety. I believe that is the place that the majority newcomers to the world of stock market investing discover themselves in.

So I am not ashamed to confess that my first foray into the markets all these years in the past was by means of one of many common financial savings schemes run by the large investment trusts. Twenty-5 years on I?d must say that if I were simply beginning out on my funding journey now, I would do exactly the same thing.

Why Investment Trusts?

Notice that I chose investment trusts, not unit trusts. Although these funding vehicles both allow buyers to entry a diversified portfolio of stocks with comparatively small amounts of cash, in my view, funding trusts have three clear advantages over their unit trust rivals:

1. Their management fees are lower.

2. Their long run efficiency is generally far better.

3. They?ll typically be bought at a reduction to their internet asset value.

So for those who?re now scratching your head and wondering why, regardless of all these advantages, you?ve by no means heard of funding trusts, you?re in excellent company. Though issues are slowly changing, investment trusts remain a closed ebook to most buyers because, not like their unit trust cousins, they do not pay commission to monetary advisors. As a result, they?re nearly ignored by the monetary press. Let?s face it, high commissions equal high advertising budgets and since the Sunday papers depend on promoting to boost gross sales, they?ll fortunately provide beneficial protection of their money dietary supplements to merchandise promoted by excessive-spending advertisers. That feels like a nice cosy relationship between the big investment houses and the monetary media, however it leaves the small investor out in the chilly as ordinary ? deprived of details about one in every of at present?s greatest-kept investment secrets. Hopefully, I am about to help change all that.

If I?ve satisfied you that funding trusts are value investigating further, and also you?re able to put your foot on that first rung of the investment ladder, then I?ve dug out a number of choices under which I believe would make best solutions for first-time traders like you. I?ve chosen a range of vintage trusts with impeccable pedigrees from the broad global growth sector. These trusts provide a very low-value solution to entry a broad, globally diversified portfolio. Relaxation assured that they all supply an everyday month-to-month savings possibility for investors of extra modest means:

Foreign & Colonial Funding Belief

1. First up is a trust that was my first selection once I started investing a quarter of a century in the past and it is still going strong. It?s the International and Colonial Investment Trust, it permits minimal monthly financial savings of ?50 per thirty days and it?s presently trading at a discount of 9.6% to web property ? which implies that for each ?90.40 invested, you are getting ?100 value of shares. Now these discounts can fluctuate a bit. It might be that subsequent month the discount widens to eleven% or 12% ? which merely implies that if you happen to?re an everyday monthly investor, you get much more discounted shares to your money. Alternatively, the low cost might slim and even slip over into a premium as generally happens if a trust is particularly in style with investors ? thus giving your investments a boost for those who purchased at a discount. Over the long run, however, whether or not you?re a lump sum investor or an everyday saver, it could be laborious to go flawed with this belief as, during the last 3 years, your funding would have elevated by 52.7% ? not unhealthy, although past returns are no guarantee of an analogous efficiency in future.

Witan

2. An alternative choice to the Foreign and Colonial Belief, however one which does just about the identical job, is a trust referred to as Witan. It?s performed even better than the International and Colonial Belief with a return of 64.2% to traders during the last 3 years. It?s also slightly cheaper, trading at a 10.14% low cost to NAV (Net Asset Value). On paper then, a barely better bet. Once more, you can begin saving from just ?50 per month.

SAINTS

3. Finally, you would take a look at another outdated and nicely established stalwart, this time from the global development and income category, and that?s SAINTS, or the Scottish American Funding Trust. This too allows minimum month-to-month investments of ?50 per thirty days by means of its father or mother company, Baillie Gifford, and has carried out outstandingly over the past 3 years, returning 107.6% to its lucky investors. The draw back is that this performance didn?t go unnoticed and the trust now stands at a premium to net property of 4.1%. Should you?re on the lookout for earnings although, this trust at present yields over 4%, so not a nasty alternative to a building society provided you are ready to risk your capital.

Whichever option you choose, supplied you?re within the markets for the long run, as you should be if you want to make respectable returns, I believe it could be very tough to lose money with any of these trusts. That is doubly true in the event you?re making regular monthly investments as you get the benefit of pound price averaging, which suggests you buy extra shares when prices dip, thus rising your returns when shares subsequently rise. A number of years down the road, once you are feeling you?ve amassed enough in these properly-diversified, low cost trusts, you can start dabbling in particular person shares like I did.

So if you happen to were pondering of dipping a toe in at the moment?s relatively choppy investment waters, but either don?t yet have a large enough lump sum, or are too scared to dive in and commit it right now, then I do not assume you can do worse than comply with my example: play it protected and arrange an funding trust month-to-month savings scheme.

County levy $$ to go toward aerospace jobs, help for veterans, under proposal | The region

An innovative aerospace employment training initiative, more trauma and family counseling, and new investments in housing and homelessness would be funded with $6.7 million from the voter-approved Veterans and Human Services Levy, under a proposal from King County Executive Dow Constantine and? County Council member Bob Ferguson.

?On this Memorial Day weekend, we can reaffirm our commitment to our returning veterans by resolving to create the jobs, housing, and services they need to transition home safely and resume their place in our communities,? said? Constantine in a King County press release.

?King County voters should feel proud this Memorial Day knowing they help our local veterans find jobs, counseling, and housing in our community,? said? Ferguson, author and prime sponsor of the Veterans and Human Services Levy. ?Veterans can face serious challenges when they return home, and these important investments provide the assistance and support our veterans deserve.?

Savings over the life of the 2006-2011 Veterans and Human Services Levy have created $6.7 million in one-time funds. The funds will be distributed over the next two years through a supplemental appropriation ordinance that the Executive is expected to transmit to the County Council next week and through the upcoming 2013-2014 biennial budget.

The proposal seeks to address three of the biggest struggles faced by local veterans: unemployment, mental health issues, and homelessness. Highlights of the funding proposal will include:

  • $2 million for a new Aerospace and Veteran Employment Training Initiative ? Levy funding will support a new initiative as part of the?King County Aerospace Alliance to help skilled veterans and others train for jobs in the burgeoning aerospace industry.

This two-year program, proposed to begin this September at WorkSource Renton, would help veterans transfer the skills they learned in the military to aerospace industry jobs. It would offer direct training, personalized career assessment, job coaching and financial assistance, as well as potential paid internships.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty over the past 10 years was 12.1 percent, significantly higher than the overall unemployment rate of 8.1 percent.

  • $550,000 for increased Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment and military family counseling ? Levy funds currently support a successful partnership with the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs to provide PTSD treatment and counseling. The counseling has reduced symptoms in 95 percent of the veterans served. The additional funding would increase PTSD treatment hours for individuals and families. Funds would also accelerate the launch of a new program one year early to provide vital support to military families before, during, and after the deployment of their loved one.

Of those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, over 90 percent have been exposed to traumatic, combat-related situations. These experiences correlate to high rates of mental illness; about 20 percent of recently returning military service members report symptoms of mental health disorders, including PTSD and depression.

  • $2.3 million for veterans housing capital and services ? The plan would invest significantly in housing capital and services in conjunction with the?Five Year Plan to End Homelessness Among Veterans, a federal initiative?to strengthen programs that prevent and end homelessness among veterans. The funding could also be used to make modifications to homes to accommodate disabled veterans.

According to the U.S. Census, approximately one in three of the adult homeless population has served in the military.?An estimated 144,842 Veterans spent at least one night in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program in one recent year. Moreover,?the prevalent rate of unemployment and lack of job opportunities creates increased housing instability for returning veterans.

The balance of $1.85 million in the proposal would fund services and programs for veterans and others in need, including enhanced outreach to women veterans and veterans of color; additional job training and public health services for veterans, and investments to address youth homelessness.

King County voters originally approved the Veterans and Human Services Levy in 2005, and?overwhelmingly renewed the levy last August with a nearly 70 percent approval. Half of the levy revenue is dedicated to serving veterans, military personnel, and their families, and half is for other individuals and families in need.

Giant telescope to be in South Africa, Australia

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? Australia and South Africa will share hosting of a giant radio telescope made up of thousands of separate dishes and intended to help scientists figure out the make-up of the universe, the international consortium overseeing the project announced Friday.

South Africa led an African consortium that included Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia, and telescopes will be erected in all its partners. In South Africa, dishes will be added to a remote site in the arid Karoo desert where a smaller radio telescope project already is under way.

South Africa and Australia, which partnered with New Zealand in bidding for the project, had competed fiercely. South Africa claimed victory Friday, saying it got two of the projects three major components.

"We may feel slightly disappointed that we didn't get the whole thing. But I think one should emphasize that we did get most of it," said Justin Jonas, the chief South African scientist on the project. "Two-thirds of the biggest instrument in the world is still the biggest instrument in the world."

South Africa's science minister Naledi Pandor and scientists who had prepared the country's bid celebrated with an Africa-shaped cake at a news conference in South Africa's capital.

"This marks a real turning point in Africa, where we are becoming a destination for science and engineering, and not just a place where there are resources and tourism opportunities," Jonas added.

Australia also welcomed the split decision.

"It is an outstanding result for the Australia-New Zealand bid after many years of preparation and an intensive international process," said Sen. Chris Evans, Australia's science minister.

The Square Kilometer Array telescope will be 50 times more sensitive and scan the sky 10,000 times faster than any existing telescope. It requires huge open spaces with very few humans.

John Womersley, chair of the consortium's board, said the telescope will help scientists answer key questions: "Where do we come from? Where are we going? What is this universe we live in?"

"We don't understand what 96 percent of our universe is made of," he said.

The organization said dividing construction of the telescope will "maximize on investments already made by both Australia and South Africa."

Womersley said that splitting construction between the two nations will likely add around 10 percent to the ?350 million ($439 million) cost of the first phase of building the giant telescope. But he said there would be a payoff for astronomers.

"It delivers more science in phase one. The capabilities of this instrument are greater than the original design," Womersley said.

Fulham?s American Ace Eyes Champions League Football

American forward Clint Dempsey has hinted at leaving Fulham this summer, saying he wants to participate in bigger competitions, including the Champions League.

Although the 29 year old forward, who helped the Cottagers finish in ninth in the Premier League this season, said he had some great moments at Craven Cottage, he wanted to move to get exposure at the highest level.

"I am grateful for everything Fulham have done for me, some of the best memories I have in soccer have been there, but the fact remains that I want to play in Champions League. I want to play at the highest level possible," said Dempsey, according to a Guardian?report.

"I want to do as much as I can in my career and look back and say I made the most of all the opportunities I have had. I am always going to want to play in Champions League," The Independent?quoted?the United States forward as saying.

Dempsey's desire to move from Fulham will come as good news for Arsenal who are reportedly targeting the talented American. Dempsey has scored a total of 23 goals (in all competitions) for Fulham this seasom.

Meanwhile, big spending French outfits Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly interested in the American forward but Dempsey said he did not care about baseless rumours unless someone really came forward and made an offer. ?

"I don't get caught up in that [speculation] because until somebody is putting down some money it doesn't matter. If teams are really interested, they need to put their money where their mouth is and make an offer," the Mirror?quoted?Dempsey as saying.

United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann hopes Dempsey gets a chance to play in the Champions League with some big club next season. The former German striker, who is busy with his team's preparations for the friendly clash against Scotland on Saturday, feels the American forward deserves to play in the highest level.

"If he has the opportunity to go to a Champions League team, that's the cr?me de la cr?me of club soccer then you have to do that, with all the respect obviously to Fulham, as he often mentions. But you want to play in the biggest club competition in the world and that's the European Champions League and hopefully something will happen over the next couple of weeks," Reuters?reported?Klinsmann as saying.

Meanwhile, Fulham boss Martin Jol feels his side can be even better next season provided they keep their best players, including Dempsey.

"If all the players are still there, I believe we can do even better," said Jol, according to an Espnstar?report.

Handy Tips for Pet Sitting Birds | Tourist Destinations Unfolded

The dog is still man?s best friend, and cats are a close second, but birds are moving up the popularity scale as pets in the U.S. Their popularity increased dramatically between 1980 and the early 1990s, and now the spike seems to be leveling out, with preference being given to well-raised domestic birds over imported ones whose rearing may be in question. With so many pet birds in the population, the need for sitters has increased. However, there are a few things to be aware of when caring for birds.Biology Of BirdsFirst, you need to realize that birds are very different from dogs and cats in a number of ways. For one thing, they process information differently. Dogs are very smell-oriented. They sniff you, and it?s the first thing they do when they meet new people or other dogs. Much of their worldview comes through their nose. Birds, on the other hand, are very visual. They have excellent eyesight and can see in color, something to be aware of when caring for them overnight, or in situations that may require a change of clothing. To a bird, a new shirt means a new person. They have relatively well developed hearing, and use various calls, songs and other noises to communicate with others in their group or mark their territories. They are also less sensitive to taste than humans or other animals, which explains how their diet can include things like dried hot peppers that would bring other pets, or humans, to tears. It is important to understand that a bird in the wild lives life knowing that it is on something else?s menu, and their protective instincts have not changed because they lives in our homes now. Unlike our sleepy cats and dozy dogs, birds stay on the alert, and their reactions are to either fight off whatever threat they perceive, or to try and escape. Pet sitters need to keep this in mind when they try to trim the bird?s nails, for example. They should also take care in placing objects above the bird?s cage, as this can be seen as a threat, and may trigger unpleasant defensive behavior, such as screaming or biting. This also applies to rearranging household items, as the birds may react to new objects in their field of vision.Playing Nicely With OthersIf you plan to sit other pets along with birds, remember that cats and dogs are still a bird?s most common predators, so interactions between the species should be closely supervised at all times. It is possible for dogs, cats, and birds to get along reasonably well; however, this will take a great deal of time and patience. In addition to being a predator, cats also pose a serious health risk to birds. Bacteria found in cat saliva can kill a bird within 24 hours, so any scratch or bite, no matter how insignificant it may seem, requires immediate emergency treatment by a veterinarian.Reptiles and rodents are also major health hazards for birds. Reptiles can carry the salmonella bacteria on their skin, so it is important to wash your hands after handling reptiles in your care to avoid transmitting the bacteria to the birds, as well as to other people. Rodent wastes contain bacteria that are not normally found in a bird?s natural environment, so a bird has little or no resistance to it. If ingested severe illness or death could result, so it is best to keep birds and rodents well apart. You Can?t Be Too CarefulFinally, it is important to realize that a bird?s entire physiology is different than that of most of the pets we are familiar with. For one thing, there are fewer vaccines available to treat a number of major diseases that birds are prone to developing, and some diseases are more easily transmitted than others. If you are responsible for multiple birds, it may be a good idea to purchase a number of plain white t-shirts and use a separate shirt with each bird to avoid accidental contamination. When looking after a bird in your home, try to keep it separate from your other pets, or any birds you might own.In order to be light enough to get airborne, a bird?s bones are hollow and it has a network of air sacs throughout his body. As a result, birds are highly sensitive to smoke and other fumes in the air, so be mindful of your use of perfume, cigarettes, or any other strong odors. Before caring for a bird, you must know how to properly hold and restrain a bird to avoid injuring it, or being harmed yourself. Holding a bird firmly around the middle of his body can cause it to die of suffocation, so if you must restrain one, it is advisable to wrap a towel loosely around the body first.

The Brilliant Career Advice Google CEO Eric ... - Business Insider

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg gave the graduating class of the Harvard Business School a speech on their Class Day, which is the part of the run up to commencement.

We have the full speech, along with a video here.

But we want to highlight one of the best things in the speech. It's smart advice for just about everyone.

Here is the full bit, but really it can boiled down to this: "Don't be an idiot." We've added our own emphasis where appropriate:

As the world becomes more connected and less hierarchical, traditional career paths are shifting as well. In 2001, after working in the government, I moved out to Silicon Valley to try finding a job. My timing wasn?t really that good. The bubble had crashed, small companies were closing, big companies were laying people off. One woman CEO looked at me and said, we wouldn?t even think about hiring someone like you. After awhile I had a few offers and I had to make a decision, so what did I do? I am MBA trained, so I made a spreadsheet. I listed my jobs in the columns and my criteria in the rows, and compared the companies and the missions and the roles. One of the jobs on that sheet was to become Google?s first business unit general manager, which sounds good now, but at the time no one thought consumer internet companies could ever make money. I was not sure there was actually a job there at all. Google had no business units, so what was there to generally manage. And the job was several levels lower than jobs I was being offered at other companies. So I sat down with Eric Schmidt, who had just become the CEO, and I showed him the spread sheet and I said, this job meets none of my criteria. He put his hand on my spreadsheet and he looked at me and said, Don?t be an idiot. Excellent career advice. And then he said, Get on a rocket ship. When companies are growing quickly and they are having a lot of impact, careers take care of themselves. And when companies aren?t growing quickly or their missions don?t matter as much, that?s when stagnation and politics come in. If you?re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don?t ask what seat. Just get on.

About 6 and half years later, when I was leaving Google, I took that advice to heart. I was offered CEO jobs at a bunch of companies, but I went to Facebook as COO. At the time people said, why are you going to work for a 23 year old? The traditional metaphor for careers is a ladder, but I no longer think that metaphor holds. It doesn?t make sense in a less hierarchical world. When I was first at Facebook, a woman named Lori Goler, a 1997 graduate of HBS, was working in marketing at eBay and I knew her kind of socially. And she called me and said, I want to talk with you about coming to work with you at Facebook. So I thought about calling you, she said, and telling you all the things I?m good at and all the things I like to do. But I figured that everyone is doing that. So instead I want to know what?s your biggest problem and how can I solve it. My jaw hit the floor. I?d hired thousands of people up to that point in my career, but no one had ever said anything like that. I had never said anything like that. Job searches are always about the job searcher, but not in Laurie?s case. I said, you?re hired. My biggest problem is recruiting and you can solve it. So Lori changed fields into something she never thought she?d do, went down a level to start in a new field and has since been promoted and runs all of the people operations at Facebook and has done an extraordinary job.
