Congratulations to Drs. Tony Koleske and Titus Boggon, two of our current grant recipients doing research at Yale University. While doing research under our grant for their study of??Targeting a Breast Cancer Invasion Control Switch? they have discovered some additional information that was recently published as a paper in Acta Crystallographica Section F: Structural Biology and Crystallization Communications, a rapid all-electronic journal, which provides a home for short communications on the crystallization and structure of biological macromolecules.The paper, entitled: Lysozyme Contamination Facilitates Crystallization of a Heterotrimeric Cortactin-Arg-Lysozyme Complex an e-journal article, describes their study and reveals outcomes observed while working on a discreet portion of their research at-large. This observation is significant because as Dr. Koleske states:

?The primary advance is the fact that we have solved the structure of the cortactin-Arg interface.? Arg and cortactin form the core of invasive structures called invadopodia that help invasive cancer cells escape the tumor and invade surrounding tissue.? Our previous and ongoing work indicates that a specific interaction between Arg and cortactin is critical for breast cancer cell invasiveness and that disrupting it can attenuate breast cancer invasion in vivo.? Our solution of the high-resolution structure (meaning we know how the atoms in each protein interact with each other) is an important step toward devising drugs that could potentially disrupt this interaction in cancer cells and block breast cancer invasion and metastasis.?
